DUI attorney marketing is the work of reaching a driver, or a worried family member, in the hours after an arrest and before the license deadline passes, then turning that call into a signed retainer. This guide gives October 2026 click costs for DUI searches and the break-even math for buying them, then covers license deadlines, state naming, high-stakes case types, ad hours, lead buying and ethics. Superpractice traces each signed DUI case back to the search or referral that produced it.

What does a click cost in DUI defense?

Core DUI searches averaged about $67 to $91 a click in October 2026. Searches about the license side of a case cost far less, about $22 to $28, while price-shopping searches cost nearly as much as the core terms.

dui defense attorney14,800$88.76

owi lawyer1,600$47.91
cheap dui lawyer880$73.75
dmv hearing lawyer880$21.56
Google Ads keyword data, US national averages, collected October 2026.

These are national estimates and DUI volumes swing from month to month, so read them as a range. We left out “dui lawyer” itself, whose monthly figures jumped between 40,500 and 550,000, along with a few small terms whose averages did not fit their bid ranges.

When does a DUI click pay for itself?

When the clicks it takes to sign one case cost less than you are willing to pay for that case. Work it out from your own fee, contact rate and signing rate before you raise a single bid.

At an average of $67.14 a click for “dui lawyer near me”, that example campaign loses money. It needs a higher contact rate, a higher signing rate, a higher fee or cheaper searches. The signing rate is usually the easiest to move, which is why firms that win on paid DUI search tend to win on intake first. Every call answered live raises what each click is worth.

Run the same arithmetic for each search group and each county. A campaign that loses money on core terms can still pay on license searches, and the reverse is often true in large metros.

Which DUI searches are worth buying?

Searches that combine urgency and place are the core. License and hearing searches are cheaper and often reach people early in the case. Price-shopping searches cost almost as much as core terms, so buy them only if your pricing fits.

  • Urgent local searches. About 60,500 a month for a DUI lawyer near me at $67.14. Most budgets go here, and map listings and Local Services Ads compete for the same people.
  • Defense-worded searches. “DUI defense attorney” and “drunk driving lawyer” cost about $89 to $91 a click. These searchers are often comparing firms.
  • License searches. A license suspension lawyer at $27.74 and a DMV hearing lawyer at $21.56. Cheaper clicks, tied to a deadline, often from someone who has not yet chosen a lawyer for the criminal case.
  • Price searches. “Cheap DUI lawyer” at $73.75 and “DUI lawyer payment plan” at $86.98. If you offer payment plans, say so on the page and bid. If not, exclude these words.

Exclude searches for public defenders, DUI classes and schools, checkpoint locations, jobs and bail bonds. They bring curious or unqualified clicks at DUI prices. Review the search terms report weekly, since a single bad phrase can absorb a day’s budget.

How should the license deadline shape your DUI marketing?

Make the deadline the center of your pages and ads. In many states a DUI arrest starts a separate license process with a short window to ask for a hearing, and people who learn about it tend to hire sooner.

Florida is a clear example. Under Florida Statutes § 322.2615, a driver whose license is suspended after a DUI arrest may request a review within 10 days after the notice of suspension, and the temporary permit expires at midnight on the 10th day. Other states set different windows and procedures, so write the rule for each state where you practice.

  • Put your state’s deadline near the top of every DUI page, with the date arithmetic explained.
  • Write one page on the license process alone, separate from the criminal case.
  • Use the deadline in ad copy, stated plainly and without alarm.
  • Ask for the arrest date on the form, so the team can see who is closest to the deadline.

Many people do not know the license case exists until it is nearly too late. The firm that explains it first looks like the firm that knows what happens next.

Should you say DUI, DWI, OWI or OVI?

Use the term your state’s law and your local readers use, and cover the others in your keywords. Google treats DUI and DWI searches as the same, but OWI, OVI and OUI are separate searches with their own volumes.

In our October 2026 estimates, “dui lawyer” and “dwi lawyer” returned identical figures, as did their near me versions. “OWI lawyer” drew about 1,600 searches a month, “OVI lawyer” about 390 and “OUI attorney” about 210, each concentrated where the term is the legal name, such as OVI in Ohio and OUI in Massachusetts.

  • Write headings and opening lines in your state’s term, and mention the common alternatives once.
  • Add the alternatives to your ad groups, since drivers who moved from another state search the way they learned.
  • Use the exact statutory name on legal explainer pages, even when the headline uses the common term.

Which DUI cases deserve their own pages and campaigns?

Cases where the stakes go beyond the usual penalties. Commercial drivers, licensed professionals, noncitizens, drivers under 21, repeat offenses and refusals each bring a different fear, and a page that names that fear does better than a general one.

DUI case types and what the page should address
Case typeWhat the person fearsWhat the page should cover
Commercial driverLosing the job that depends on the licenseCommercial license consequences in your state
Licensed professionalA report to a nursing, medical or other boardHow a DUI can affect a professional license
NoncitizenImmigration consequencesWhy to speak with immigration counsel too, and how you coordinate
Under 21School, scholarships and a recordUnderage limits and how cases usually proceed
Repeat or felony DUIJail timePenalties, timelines and what the firm does first
Test refusalAn automatic suspensionHow refusal affects the license case

These searches are often too small to measure, so they suit SEO more than ads. A firm that handles commercial driver cases well can rank for them in a few counties and win matters that larger advertisers never target.

How does DUI lawyer SEO work at the county and courthouse level?

DUI lawyer SEO is local. Rank in the map results near the courthouses where you appear, publish a page for each county with real local detail, and answer the questions people ask in the first days after an arrest.

  • One page per county or court. Name the courthouse, how first appearances are scheduled and whether a DUI court or diversion program exists. Build pages only where you actually appear.
  • Questions in the order they arrive. The license deadline, then the first court date, then penalties, then how to choose a lawyer and what it costs.
  • Profile and reviews. Choose the most specific category your Google Business Profile offers, keep hours accurate, and ask for reviews when a case closes.
  • Attorney credibility. Real training in breath testing, blood testing or field sobriety procedures belongs on attorney pages.

About 110 people a month search for DUI lawyer SEO itself, and many are sold the same templated county pages with only the place name changed. Those pages rarely hold rankings. Our guides to SEO for lawyers and local SEO for law firms cover the groundwork.

When should DUI ads run, and who answers?

Run ads during the hours your phones are answered by someone who can help, and no longer. DUI demand peaks outside office hours, so the real decision is about staffing nights and weekends, not about bids.

Demand also moves by month. In our estimates, searches for a DUI lawyer near me ranged from about 27,100 in November 2025 to 90,500 in August and September 2026. Watch your own call log by month and hour, and move budget toward the times that produce signed cases.

  • Decide who covers nights and weekends before switching those hours on.
  • Schedule ads by hour, and raise bids only where the phone is answered live.
  • Review every missed and after-hours call first thing each morning.
  • Compare signed rates for calls answered live with calls returned later.

Many firms see more calls around holiday weekends and large local events, when enforcement often increases. Plan coverage for those dates in advance rather than discovering the gap in the call log.

Should a DUI firm buy leads or build referral relationships?

Test bought leads only on clear terms, and build referral relationships with other lawyers and past clients for the long run. Do not pay anyone for sending cases, since ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) and state versions prohibit paying for recommendations.

DUI lead sellers compete hard for firm owners. The phrase “dui leads” carried an average click cost of about $84 in our data, a sign of how many sellers bid on it. Ask whether each lead is exclusive, how it was generated, how the person agreed to be contacted, and what happens to leads outside your counties or with conflicts. Then compare cost per signed case with your own campaigns.

Referrals come from lawyers who do not take DUI cases, such as family, estate planning and civil firms, and from past clients and their families. Some marketing guides suggest arrangements with bail agents or treatment providers. Anything of value given in exchange for referrals runs into Rule 7.2, and state rules can be stricter. Check with your state bar before you agree to anything.

How do you trace a late-night DUI call to a signed retainer?

Give each campaign and search group its own tracking, record the hour and source of every contact, and follow each one to a signed retainer and fee. Then compare cost per signed DUI case by search group, not cost per click.

A DUI case often starts with a call at night from a parent, continues with a text from the driver the next morning, and signs two days later after someone searches the firm’s name. If those touches are not joined into one record, the night campaign looks wasted and branded search takes the credit.

Superpractice does this for DUI firms. It joins ad clicks, page views, calls, texts, forms and bookings into one timeline per client, shows first touch beside last touch, and ranks channels and campaigns by signed clients, revenue and cost per signed client. Your team still answers, meets and signs. It simply knows which campaigns paid off. See how attribution works.

What ethics rules most often trip up DUI advertising?

Results claims, specialist claims and direct contact after an arrest. Rules differ by state, so review DUI ads, pages and letters against your state bar’s rules before they run.

This is general information, not legal advice.

  • Results. Advertising dismissals or reduced charges can mislead without context. Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading communications, and many states require disclaimers on past results.
  • Certification. Under Rule 7.2(c), a lawyer may not claim to be a certified specialist unless certified by a state-approved or ABA-accredited organization, and the ad must name it.
  • Letters after an arrest. Arrest records are public in many places, and some firms write to people within days. Rule 7.3 bars live person-to-person solicitation for financial gain, and states add their own rules for written contact.
  • A named lawyer. Rule 7.2(d) requires each ad to name at least one lawyer or firm responsible for its content, which matters for agency-built landing pages.

Archive each version of your DUI ads, pages and letters with the dates it ran, so any later question has a clear answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is DUI marketing different from criminal defense marketing?

+

Yes, in volume, price and timing. In our data DUI drew more searches than any other charge and some of the highest click costs, and it carries a license deadline most charges do not. Many firms run DUI as its own campaigns and pages even when it sits on a broader criminal defense site.

Do Local Services Ads work for DUI cases?

+

They can. Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click and show your review rating, which suits urgent near me searches. Check which legal categories Google offers in your area, mark every lead with its outcome, and compare cost per signed case with your search campaigns.

Should a DUI firm publish its fees?

+

Publishing a starting fee or a range for a first offense helps people comparing firms late at night, and it filters out those who cannot afford private counsel. If fees vary too much, explain what drives them, such as a trial, a refusal or a prior offense.

What should a DUI contact form ask?

+

Only what helps the team act fast. The arrest date, the county, the person’s name and the best private way to reach them are enough. Leave the story for the call, and confirm each submission with a message that says when someone will respond.

How many reviews does a DUI firm need?

+

Enough to look established beside the firms around you in the map results, and recent enough to show you are active. Many DUI clients will not post under their full name, so make initials welcome and ask the family members who helped hire you.

Should DUI ads mention a free consultation?

+

If you offer one, it is worth testing, since late-night searchers want to know whether calling will cost them. Run ad versions that lead with the license deadline against versions that lead with the free consultation, and keep the one that signs more cases.
